History of the Roman Empire and its battles. When
Octavian took the title of Augustus in 27 BC he created the Roman Empire
from the former republic. From then on Rome's power stretched further
and further encompassing all of Europe as far as Britain and east to
Babylonia, as well as taking in Egypt at its southern extent. After the
third century, however, Rome began to decline in its power and
influence, eventually falling, after being split into the Byzantine and
Roman Empires, in 476BC. Click the titles below to view further

 | The War Between Rome and Carthage
 | Carthage became a military power in the Mediterranean and its growth
led to the conflict with Rome which led to what are known as the
Punic Wars. |
 | As the 2nd Punic War ended, the Romans stripped Carthage of
all possessions and most of its wealth. However, Carthage
managed to rebuild itself until it was again powerful. A quarrel
with a neighbouring state which happened to be an ally of Rome
led to the 3rd Punic War. In 150 BC Rome demanded that Carthage
be abandoned to which the Carthaginians said no. The battle
lasted for 3 years, with the Carthaginians refusing to give up
until finally overcome. Some residents escaped while others were
sold as slaves. Carthage itself was burned and was never
rebuilt. |
