| Battle for Ypres.
During World war one there were three major battle for Ypres. (A
Belgium Town west of Flanders and South of Ostend) The first a British
Offensive between October and November 1914. The fighting was extremely
heavy and ended up with the Germans gaining the commanding ground around
Ypres including the Ridge of Messines. The British and French held the
saliant around Ypres which extended into the German line, This made
the area held by the British and French to be bombarded by three fronts
and nearly from the rear as well. The losses were estimated to be 150,000
casualties each on both sides.
The second Battle for Ypres (April to May 1917) opened with a Chlorine
gas attack by the Germans, This opened a large gap in the British lines,
But the Germans were unable to exploit the situation, before the British
had filled the gap with reserves. More gas attacks followed, and the
Allied forces had to withdrawal a small area ,making there incursion in
the German Line smaller.
The Third Battle for Ypres in July to November 1917, is known as
Passchendale. This Allied Offensive was fought by British, Canadian and Australian
troops and was launched with the aim to Capture the Belgium
ports held by the German's. Fought in very bad conditions in driving rain
and waterlogged ground. The Allies lost over 300,000 casualties for the
gain of only a few miles. |
| The Battle of the Somme
Allied offensive in northern France on the River Somme at
Beaumont-Hamel-Chaulnes during July and November 1916. The First
Battle was launched by the British 4th Army with the French 3rd and
8th Army groups supporting them. On the 1st of July 1916. the attack went
ahead against a well protected and well dug in German 2nd army, (The
British had bombarded the area with a huge artillery bombardment which did
little damage to the German defences, and also gave them warning of the
impending attack. The heaviest losses the British army had incurred,
19,000 troops were Killed, Even with these huge losses the attack
continued and several small advances were made. on the 14th of July the
German defences lines were nearly breached. After a 2 month lull, the
attack started again but this time 47 tanks took part, but most of them
broke down. again a few gains were made, . by the middle of November the
total losses were a staggering 615,000 Allied casualties and 500,000 German
casualties.
The second Battle of the Somme was the start of the German Spring
offensive of the 21st March 1918. |

To the Green Fields Beyond, Cambrai, France, 20th November 1917 by David Pentland.
At 0620 hours covered by a brief barrage from 1000 guns, Brigadier General Elles in a MkIV called Hilda led his 476 tanks against the impregnable German Hindenburg line at Cambrai. Supported by 6 infantry divisions and 4 Royal Flying Corps squadrons flying ground attack missions, the attack had broken through 3 trench lines and penetrated 5 miles on a 6 mile front by lunchtime. Although these gains were not exploited and later retaken by a German counter offensive, Cambrai showed the full potential of the tank on the battlefield.
